Coaching Competency Self-Assessment

Honestly diagnose your coaching profile across six core dimensions — presence, questioning, safety and challenge, impact, and self-management — then build a concrete development plan.

What's inside

This collection provides an honest, structured self-assessment across the core dimensions of coaching competence — not as a pass/fail exercise, but as a developmental tool that helps coaches see their profile clearly and build a concrete plan for growth.

The programme covers six competency dimensions:

Coaching Presence — Your capacity to be fully present, manage your own reactions, and create the conditions for genuine exploration.

Listening & Observation — Hearing beyond words to emotion, energy, patterns, and what's not being said.

Questioning & Challenge — Asking questions that open thinking rather than lead it, and knowing when and how to challenge constructively.

Safety & Challenge Balance — Building enough psychological safety to enable honest exploration while maintaining enough challenge to prevent comfortable stagnation.

Impact & Effectiveness — Whether your coaching actually produces lasting change — honest assessment of outcomes, not just process quality.

Self-Management & Development — Managing your own triggers, maintaining boundaries, engaging with supervision, and taking responsibility for your ongoing growth.

How to use this collection

As a development planning tool, complete the full self-assessment, identify your two or three priority development areas, then build a concrete plan with specific actions and timescales.

For supervision preparation, bring your self-assessment to supervision as a starting point for discussing your development. The structured format helps focus supervision on specific competency areas rather than general discussion.

As a periodic review, repeat the self-assessment every six to twelve months to track development, celebrate progress, and recalibrate priorities.
